Questions to Ask Any Insurance Agent Before You Trust Them With Your Coverage

Not all agents are created equal, and it’s worth vetting anyone before you let them guide a decision this important. Here’s a short list of questions worth asking — of us, or of anyone else you’re considering:

1. Are you independent, or do you only sell plans from one company?

2. How long have you been independent? Some have only been independent a year or so and will have long standing biases.

3. Are you licensed in my state, and how long have you been doing this locally?

4. Will I be able to reach you directly next year if something changes? It is important to know how to contact your agent year after year and through the year if problems or questions arise.

5. Do you have reviews I can actually verify, tied to real local clients? Google is the most trusted way for real clients to review their performance. Don't just look at the 5 Star reviews, read the not so happy clients as well.

6. Can you explain the trade-offs of each option, not just recommend one? A good agent should be able to justify the plans they recommend and give you detailed reasons. Some agents just feel comfortable with one plan because it's the plan they chose or it's just a plan they know but it may not be the right plan for you.

7. If I have a claims issue or a billing problem, will you help me resolve it, or hand me off to a hotline?

A local advisor who’s proud of their work will answer every one of these without hesitation — often before you even ask. A national call center, by design, usually can’t. That gap is exactly why working with a real, local human — someone who’s still there next year, still answers the phone, and still has a reputation in this community to protect — beats a blank face on a screen from a far-away state every time. At Elkin Insurance, we pride ourselves in not only knowing your plan options but knowing the doctors and which plans are great for medication's, dental, vision, customer service, because we have years of experience not only locally, but with the insurance carriers directly. And we will recommend the ones that we feel fits your situation.
